As an educator, I see the strong need for children to feel confident about themselves, and the way they speak to others in order for them to be successful in school. Turn taking, respectful problem solving, and positive thinking skills are the foundation of a positive school experience. When children are equipped to speak up for themselves, to be respectful to peers, and have conversation prior to coming to school, they are set up for a successful and positive experience. Being able to advocate for themselves through conversation and expression is a lifelong skill that I hope to help you with on your journey of parenthood!
Social skills and the ability to respectfully interact are necessary for success from childhood through adulthood. The development of social skills lays the groundwork for academic success and beyond. Due to the pandemic, young children were not given the opportunity to practice these social skills in a group setting, therefore being at a disadvantage when they reach school age. Social skills can be learned, observed, and practiced both at home and in the classroom. According to Bierman et al., 2010, high quality and evidence based social emotional learning activities produce positive outcomes for students, including improved behavior, attitudes, and academic performance.Â
The Wonderers Education program is set up to be one session and activity per day for the month, but please do what feels best for you and your family! We will provide 15 activities for $30- just $1 a day, focusing on different areas of development every month. We are beginning with Social Skills because these skills are the anchor to all of the other academic skills that will come. Self awareness, empathy and kindness, managing emotions and interactions are just a few of the areas we will cover this month.
